“It is important to get to classes before your belt test so you can prepare. Try hard and don’t stop.”
My name is Ian and I am 9 years old and I have been training for 5 years.
Belt tests aren’t hard IF you train a lot for them. I recommend not missing classes so you can learn more aikido and if you miss too many classes you may not be able to take the belt test.
When you get closer to your belt test you will train in more of the techniques that will be on your test. It is important to get to classes before your belt test so you can prepare.
On the day of the belt test there are some important things to remember:
Remember to bring your sword , your dogi and sandals or flip flops – if you forget these items you can’t take your test
Don’t be late for the class or you can’t test
When you are asked to do something during the test, you should run to do whatever is asked of you.
You should not talk or ask questions. You should listen to the Sensei.
You should know the names of techniques and sword work for the test in Japanese. You will be asked to do certain techniques during the test.
Don’t be nervous. There is nothing to be nervous of. Try hard and don’t stop.
I hope you will have a successful belt test.

Ian is a member of the Youth Leadership Team at AKI Santa Barbara. As such, he is held to a higher standard than the other kids for attendance, manners, and dedication. Each week, he's required to train in a certain number of youth classes, serve as instructor apprentice, and attend international seminars with visiting instructors at our Los Angeles dojo. He's also required to arrive early at the dojo to clean and prepare the mats and stay till the end to clean and put away the mats.
Our instructors create a positive environment to build confidence and self esteem.
Kids have positive role models whose expertise exemplify the rewards of discipline and dedication.
Kids learn leadership and responsibility, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect both in and out of the dojo.
